Viral meningitis is usually mild and often clears on its own in 10 days or less.
Aspirin should not be used in viral illnesses in children under age 12 years. Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen can be used to treat fever. The number of fluid-filled blisters may vary from just a few to hundreds on the skin. Usually this occurs in children under 10 years old, but occasionally can occur in young adults. The long axis of the lesion is oriented along the skin lines. The lower lip has an ulcer with an erythematous halo. These blisters may range in size from one-eighth to one-quarter of an inch, or no larger than a green pea.
There is no specific treatment for the infection other than relief of symptoms. Antibiotics are not indicated unless a complicating secondary skin infection is present. Respiratory droplet transmission also may occur but is less likely.
